Last night at 3 a.m. you were probably sleeping, but we weren’t!
Third Law held its White Belt Competition team tryouts at 3 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, and six future competitors showed the toughness to make it through the four hours of mental and physical challenges.
So without further ado, lets give a big congratulations to (left to right) Jamison Edlin, Orelbis Garcia, Mikhail Dye, Nick Giddings, Jonathan Varela and Jason Kurek. Great job guys!
We can’t give out too many details about our top-secret tryouts, but scroll down for some pictures of the guys putting in some hard work.
Throughout the night, Master Roberto and Coach Joey pushed the future competitors to their limits, physically and mentally.
Many students join the school without any thought of competition, but then find themselves becoming addicted to the sport and wanting to test themselves in new ways. Others come in knowing that competition is their path to follow.
Once students make the team, they’re able to attend a special Competitors-only class at 9 a.m. on Sunday mornings, where they learn essential techniques, strategies and rules that will help them succeed in competitions — both locally and, more importantly, internationally.
After hours of tests, it was time for the future competitors to head outside for one final workout.

The competitor hopefuls, outside before sunrise, ready for whatever task awaits them. On the sidelines, teammates Eric, Harvy and Coach Joey stand by for encouragement (or torture!) ...
Soon enough, the sun started to rise…
And then, finally. It was done.
Time to celebrate guys… and get ready for your first competition. We can’t wait to see you all on the mats in the 9 a.m. Competition Team Class!
We’ll leave you with some final words from Jason, one of the new competition team members. Here’s what he had to say about his experience doing the tryouts:
I just wanted to thank the Third Law coaches and my excellent teammates for the experience of a lifetime today! It was unreal and possibly the most challenging thing I have ever done. I have to say that the support and encouragement that you receive at Third Law truly can lead to great things!
— Jason Kurek
