Warning: Most Martial Arts School Teachers

Are Liars!

( I will be dropping BOMBS like this warning message through out t Do you want to know if a school his letter …SO READ ON!)

In this letter I TELL IT LIKE IT IS and because of it, many fake martial arts instructors out there will hate me for it, and they will hate me forever, very few legit instructors will llove me, but you know what I DON’T CARE….I AM SICK AND TIRED OF HAVING PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS LIED TO, AND HAVING THEIR TIME WASTED. MY MISSION IS TO INFORM OF WHAT REAL MARTIAL ARTS IS ALL ABOUT AND HAVE AS MANY PEOPLE JUMP IN MY SUCCESS BOAT, and I won’t stop until these fake schools change their name from Joes’s Martial Arts to Joe’s Auto Repair.Let the Auto Repair Industry deal with these impostors ;) ….sorry guys)

Dear Reader,

Chapter 1: Our Heritage: A History of Success

Chapter 2: Our Heritage: A History of Success

You Deserve The Best

Who you learn from is VERY IMPORTANT!

I preach this important basic concept to all my students: You have to learn from the best. Before I go into deep detail about this, let’s call out four famous teachers/students: Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and Alexander the Great.

As you probably already know, these are some of the most influential human beings to have ever walked the earth. What is even more interesting is the relationship they hold:

Socrates taught Plato who taught Aristotle who taught Alexander the Great.

Find your mentors: People who you believe can help you achieve your goals and give you the wisdom they possess. Find your role models: People in whose footsteps you want to follow. Surround yourself with successful people, but be loyal and honest. Make up your mind, believe in them, and move forward because time it is not what we have in our hands. When evaluating a mentor, always remember that actions travel farther than words, belts, and accomplishments. You might take classes for three years with an ADCC champ and get nowhere if he doesn’t want you to become a star as well. Evaluate his actions.

FACT: To Be The Best… To Achieve Your Personal Goals (no matter what they are)… One Thing’s For Sure:

“You Have To Train

With The Best!”

Team Third Law

“This is an A+ operation backed by an A+ organization in Team Lloyd Irvin.”

–Marcos Avellan, Freestyle Fighting Academy Owner and Head Instructor

I heavily recommend Team Third Law with Roberto Torralbas. He is one of Lloyd Irvin's top guys and an INCREDIBLE instructor. Besides being a world class competitor and grappler, he is a great coach and person. He is a very motivated and always working to make his school better and better. Roberto Torralbas is one of the most technical guys I've trained with and I wouldn't recommend his gym publicly unless it was a world class facility. This is an A+ operation backed by an A+ organization in Team Lloyd Irvin.

He is a Computer Engineer who graduated from Cornell and left it all behind to pursue his passion, which is martial arts. You will notice this passion upon walking into his gym – he is doing things that 99% of martial arts schools aren't doing. His competition record is also extremely impressive – he is a winning machine that competes around the country every month.

I've been known to travel all the way to Naples from Miami to train with the guy. If you are in the area, you should definitely check it out. Plus, he offers a 30 day free trial, so you have nothing to lose.

Chapter 3: A School UNLIKE Any Other

We could write two Encyclopedia-sized textbooks on what differentiates us from your average martial arts school. I just want to go over some basic things.

Fact #1: There Are ARE A lot of Impostors out there

Here are some Fakers you need to be aware of:

  1. Impostors #1: a franchise that hires freelance martial arts students to teach its classes: These individuals are only in it for the money and have no interest in the quality of the program.
  2. Impostors #2: renamed Karate or traditional martial arts school: Any school that switched its name to MMA that once was a Karate, Kungfu, Taekwondo, or Krav Maga school, has no shame.
  3. Impostors #3: a throw-on-the-gloves and beat-on-each-other-club for street fighters: These guys are unprofessional and don’t know what’s going on, will get them selves hurt, and anyone around them. These are the wannabe “tough guys” who are really not that tough..
  4. Impostors #4: a big box gym that holds some “kickboxing” or “fight” classes: These individuals are like Impostors #1 but at least they don’t call themselves a martial arts school. They offer classes to people who take martial arts classes just like they go to watch a movie. They don’t care about quality of the education given…going here for martial arts instruction is like going to Burger King and expecting Caviar! And here is the most important point of this letter

YOU HAVE BEEN LIED TO

When looking around for A Martial Arts School:

  1. THEY tell you, Competition is not important. REALLY? This is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA #1 Nation in the world, where companies compete to make products better for their customers. If it is not important why are you running a business in a competitive market.
  2. THEY tell you, not to check other schools before making a decision. They are insecure, and GUESS WHAT They have reason to be.
  3. THEY tell you, you that they never competed because of injuries or age (there are 65-year-old instructors competing out there).
  1. THEY tell you, "It takes 10 years to get your BJJ black belt, NOBODY can get a LEGITIMATE BJJ Black Belt THAT fast!"…
  2. THEY tell you, "The only reason ‘that-really-good-black-belt’ is so good is because of excess mat time, NOTHING else!” … or … "They're just really talented – don't pay any attention to them"…
  3. THEY tell you, "all you need to do is show up for class … you only need to pay attention to me, don’t worry about what everyone else is doing — just keep coming to class and eventually you'll pick up everything you need"
  4. THEY tell you, "Just do what we’ve been doing for years, it’s tradition — the more you roll the better you'll get"…
  5. THEY tell you, "You just need to take your beatings for a while before you get really good — just put in your 'flying time' and you'll be fine"…

My name is Roberto Torralbas, and I'm telling you they’re…

" Shameless

Lying

FAKERS "

THEY don't want you to succeed … Their egos are too big, they'd like to keep you from experiencing high level success — where you defy all normal, common, ordinary, customary boundaries and restrictions on succeeding in martial arts — the speed, the ease, and the independence!

THINK FOR A SECOND…HEAR ME OUT… A school with low standards and unqualified instructors occurs when at one point someone takes the easy road, belts start given away for the wrong reasons, technique becomes sloppier and sloppier, instructors more out of shape, and pathetic and it is time TO HIDE…from the TRUTH!

The Truth is that competing can be fun if you do it right. If you have someone teaching you the right mindset, and training you the right way, preparing you for success. Ofcourse not many people can do that or otherwise everyone will be bringing home gold like we DO EVERY SINGLE TIME!

But even if the person doesnt like competing every now and then they will have an atheletic student stop by and try to train with the instructor. If they lose they will START MAKING EXCUSES, EVENTUALLY YOU NEVER SEE THESE INSTRUCTORS ROLL IN CLASS… and when they make a video for advertising it has to be coreograph like synchronized swimming, becuase they have no confidence in what they know. ITS SAD, ITS PATHETIC, BUT IS OUTHERE.

These instructors then use their pathetic self to base their promotions. Guess what happens when pathetic instructors train new/clean slate students…THEY WASTE THEIR TIME AND MONEY!

THESE instructors have HUGE EGOS and need to be the big DOG in class, becuase theydon’t see the big picture. HOW can they if they never stepped out to do martial arts outisde from the four walls they train in.

Let me ask you another question: Would you ride in a spaceship to the moon when that spaceship has never been tested before. Its all theoretical?

Welcome to the real world where theory its USELESS if not put into practice. Thats why I am an engineer, and I am called the BJJ ENGINEER, because everything I teach to my students, I personally test against high level competitors. I care to much about Martial Arts to teach garbage:

(Roberto Torralbas’s Athletes Blog. Good Stuff There…Check it out when you have a chance. The Cartoon is a based out of The Thinker (French: Le Penseur) is a bronze and marble sculpture by Auguste Rodin held in the Musée Rodin in Paris. It depicts a man in sober meditation battling with a powerful internal struggle. It is often used to represent philosophy.)

It is very SAD, very Very SAD and unfortunately that’s a student that one day will have a hard wake up call and just because they were misinformed. YOU DON’T HAVE THAT EXCUSE….

If you read this part YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

IMPORTANT CALCULATIONS:

This scenario is also so SAD, but I Have Seen It with my own eyes many times. Imagine I have two twins ( Student A and Student B)

Student A ( Fake School 90 Dollars a Month)

3 Years of training (Blue Belt )= 36 Months X 90 Dollars Per Month he /she has invested a total of $3240 but MOST IMPORTANTLY 3 YEARS of HIS/HER LIFE!!!

Student B ( A+ operation backed by an A+ organization let’s exaggerate for the purpose of this example and say they charge $270 per month)

1 Year of training (Blue Belt )= 12 Months X 90 Dollars Per Month he /she has invested a total of $3240 in 1 Year

But what if told you that STUDENT B not only be 5 times better than Student A , has saved time and money in the process, probably holds way more accomplishments, but to put the icing on the cake very likely be better than the instructor of the Fake School!

I Know IT’S CRAZYYYYYY The Difference it makes. AND LIKE I SAID PEOPLE WILL HATE ME FOR THIS…BUT I AM HERE FOR YOU NOT FOR FAKERS.

PROOF:

Take a look at Joe Formica.

at the time of this photo Joe had just been promoted 2 days before to blue belt after destroying the Miami International Open in 2010 by submitting all his opponents. 1 Week later he gets Silver in the Blue Belt Division and the Intermediate Division. JOE HAS ONLY BEEN TRAINING 10 Months.LOL!

So what does Joe have to look forward too. Well Luckily for Joe he doesn’t have to look to far…. look at his teammates.

That’s Joey Ruggiero in First place who has won multiple times at Blue Belt and Three Times Open Class Champion also at Blue…That is when you fight people of all weight classes … Joey has defeated some monsters and he has done all that in less than 2 years.

It keeps going, we have students that have won multiple international championships ( Us Nationals, Panams, Etc…).

The 10,000 Hour Rule(needs work)

Fact #2: True Experts are Few

To become an expert at something requires lots of hard work. To quantify expertise let’s use “The Beatles” (one of the most successful bands ever) and Bill Gates one of the most successful Man in the world of computing. How much work exactly? According to Malcolm Gladwell in Outliers: The Story of Success, to become an expert at almost anything you need to have spent about 10,000 hours in that field. Outliers is a great book and in it you will find the “10,000-Hour Rule” and here is why this is so important for you to understand :

From Wikipedia Article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outliers_%28book%29

“A common theme that appears throughout Outliers is the “10,000-Hour Rule,” based on a study by Anders Ericsson. Gladwell claims that greatness requires enormous time, using the source of The Beatles’ musical talents and Gates’ computer savvy as examples. The Beatles performed live in Hamburg, Germany more than 1,200 times from 1960 to 1964, amassing more than 10,000 hours of playing time, therefore meeting the 10,000-Hour Rule. Gladwell asserts that all of the time The Beatles spent performing shaped their talent, “so by the time they returned to England from Hamburg, Germany, ‘they sounded like no one else. It was the making of them.’” Gates met the 10,000-Hour Rule when he gained access to a high school computer in 1968 at the age of 13, and spent 10,000 hours programming on it.

In Outliers, Gladwell interviews Gates, who says that unique access to a computer at a time when they were not commonplace helped him succeed. Without that access, Gladwell states that Gates would still be “a highly intelligent, driven, charming person and a successful professional,” but that he might not be worth $50 billion. Gladwell explains that reaching the 10,000-Hour Rule, which he considers the key to success in any field, is simply a matter of practicing a specific task that can be accomplished with 20 hours of work a week for 10 years. He also notes that he himself took exactly 10 years to meet the 10,000-Hour Rule, during his brief tenure at The American Spectator and his more recent job at The Washington Post.

Is My Gym Legit? or a Joke?

Team Lloyd Irvin Bringing Home The Gold at the 2010 IBJJF World Championships

It is very rare where you can find someone with his pedigree, both on and off the mats, to be your martial arts instructor.

Roberto is an incredible athlete and a very technical fighter. I have had the pleasure of training with Roberto and let me tell you, he is the REAL DEAL! He knows how to fully apply his body into every position – making himself feel 100lbs heavier than he actually is (I jokingly call him the optical illusion). In competition, Roberto has an incredible record and has accumulated many medals and trophies over a very short period of time.

As a coach, he has an accountant's attention to detail. He knows how to break down every move into steps and relate this information in a variety of ways to make sure that everyone in the room understands. Roberto is also an engineer, so he has a better understanding of the physics behind the martial arts that makes his instruction that much more clear and concise.

I would highly recommend Roberto is an instructor. It is very rare where you can find someone with his pedigree, both on and off the mats, to be your martial arts instructor.

I

I have been teaching and training with Team Third Law for over a year now. I have also had the opportunity to travel and train at some of the top MMA and grappling schools in the world. I believe that Team Third Law's MMA program is by far the best program south west FL. The instructors are amazing at helping the students to develop in every way possible. They go out of their way to ensure that you train in the most comfortable atmosphere, with the best equipment. There BJJ Program is one of the most amazing that I have seen any where in the world. Master Roberto is a world class competitor and a world class instructor. As the Head Kickboxing instructor I always try to teach the students techniques that I use myself in the cage or that I have learned in my over 7 years of studying kickboxing and Muay Thai. I would recommend and person that is interested in self defense, physical fitness, or competing at a world class level to join Team Third Law as soon as possible.

I would NEVER recommend anyone to a school that I wouldn't confidently attend either.

I've had a chance to roll with Roberto, and I would definitely welcome training with him again in the future based on his talent/skill level. I would NEVER recommend anyone to a school that I wouldn't confidently attend either.

If You Want To See Your Full Potential You Gotta Train With The Best!

At the age of 18 I moved all the way from the island of Saipan (Northern Mariana Islands) just to train with Team Lloyd Irvin! With 14 Pro MMA fights under my belt I knew I was at the right place (Team Lloyd Irvin) to step my game up to the next level. From the very first day I walked into the academy I was hooked; the discipline, respect, team camaraderie, and martial arts environment. Coming from all the way across the globe I never felt so welcomed at a Martial Arts Academy… felt like a family. The fact that anyone can come into the academy and experience all of this is amazing! In the Academy you are surrounded by so much high level competitors! World Class BJJ Black Belts, high level strikers, Judo Olympians, D1 Wrestlers and many more. If you want to be the best, you must train with the Best!

MMA

Team Lloyd Irvin’s MMA Program is second to none! You have qualified instructors teaching systems and techniques used at the highest level of Mixed Martial Arts competition, from advanced techniques to the basic fundamentals of MMA. Don’t be surprised if you see UFC Superstars using the same techniques taught in class. The best part is you’re having a great time, getting an awesome workout, and learning lifelong skills that will make you a better person.

GRAPPLING

Team Lloyd Irvin’s Submission Wrestling/NoGi Grappling is definitely World Class! We are known as having one of the best Teams in the Country, and have competitors competing all over the nation and all over the World. Head instructor Roberto Torralbas (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Brown Belt under Master Lloyd Irvin) is not only a tournament tested grappling champion, he learns from the best instructors and passes on his knowledge to students who want to learn the art. Master Roberto keeps the classes’ fun, full of sinister techniques, and finishes it off with an awesome workout. Do yourself a favor and check our team out!

At the academy you see different people with all walks of life… Men, women, children… Old, young… In shape, never worked out a day in their lives… And Master Roberto and the programs will cater to anyone’s individual goals! And he will do everything in his power to help you reach them.

If you’re in the Southwestern part of FL and want to lose weight, get in shape, or becoming a Champion, THIRD LAW BJJ is the place to be. If you want to be the best you can be you gotta train with the best! No ifs ands or buts! It is an honor and privilege to train and work with Master Roberto! Don’t miss your chance and opportunity!

Third Law's MMA program is absolutely AMAZING. As a Pro MMA fighter and being a member

of the Lloyd Irvin mma team I have been exposed to the best training and let me be the first to say that Third Law is carring the Team Lloyd Irvin name giving the same training, same attention to detail, the same fight winning strategies and the same professional environment.

Team Leader Roberto Torralbas (a champion himself) is doing a phenomal job with Third Laws MMA program molding and raising up the next

crop of MMA Champions. I am very impressed that Roberto is putingt all his fighter through that same system that I and all other team Lloyd Irvin go through.

It is very simple if you want champion level instruction, learn techniques that work on the highest levels of competition, get in fight shape (whether you want to get in the cage or not),and to take your MMA game to the next level Third Law is the where you have to be.

I have been training along side Roberto for years I'm telling you he will take your MMA dreams and make them a

reality.

And this MMA program is for all levels. I was once a beginner an let me tell you whether your a beginner or advanced fighter you need this training Third Law is giving to groom and you refine you ablilties so you too will have your hands raised in the Cage.

Serious Program for Serious Students‎‎”

Serious Program for Serious Students‎‎. Roberto is very dedicated to his students and gets the most out of each individual. That is why he has produced the quality of students that he has in such a short time. If you want to get good at Jiu Jitsu, then this is the place for you. If you want to trick yourself into thinking you are getting good at Jiu Jitsu even if you aren't, it's probably not (sorry Roberto!)

"I look forward to training with everyone that becomes a part of our family"

Roberto is one of my soldiers. His work ethic and love for this art is second to none. Anyone that gets a chance to train with Roberto should jump at the opportunity. He represents Team Lloyd Irvin and I look forward to training with everyone that becomes a part of our family.

A Word of Advice

If you're a beginner to Jiu Jitsu or Mixed Martial Arts or Traditional Martial Arts I must warn you about a few things – You should know that not all schools are created equal and it is very important that you make an educated decision before picking a school in [blank].

Due to the overwhelming popularity of the UFC and other Mixed Martial Arts events, everyone and their brother is re-labeling their schools as "MMA" or "Grappling" schools. As an experiment, go into last year's phone book and see how many Karate schools have become "Mixed Martial Arts" schools. My point is: You have to be selective when choosing a Martial Arts school.

In fact, you should NEVER join a martial arts school unless it meets ALL the following FIVE criteria:

. Their instructors have LEGIT CREDENTIALS. What are the instructors' credentials? Have they competed? What is the reputation of the organization that they represent i.e. do they "sell" belts? Remember, if you want to be the best you have to learn from the best.

. The school MUST have MULTIPLE WRITTEN CURRICULUMS. Is there a method to the madness? You’ll be shocked to know how many schools don’t follow a step-by-step program so neither the teacher nor the student knows where they are going and how far along they are. Surprising but true. One Curriculum is good, but there has to be separation between programs and levels of the students. (Want to look at ours check http://www.ThirdLawCoach.com)

.The school must PRODUCE WINNERS. Ask yourself, has this school produced any National Champions , Pan-American Champions or winning teams? No matter the credentials of the instructor, it does you no good if he can't pass on that expertise.

. The school should adapt itself to the client's needs. Whether you want to be physically fit, learn self defense, or train for the World Championships, the school should allow you to set your own goals and help you achieve them. You don’t want to be forced into any sparring if you don’t want to.

. The prices are NOT unbelievably low. Remember that you usually get what you pay for. Would you trust a jeweler who offers you a Rolex at Timex prices? These “bargain” schools usually have dirty facilities, unqualified instructors or instructors who cannot speak English, and don’t offer an advanced program.

. A VERY OPEN TRAINING SCHEDULE

How can the school make you good if you don’t have the opportunity to train your body to its maximum. This is what differentiate the schools that are doing it because the instructors want to have a hobby or the school in which the instructors have dedicated their lives to the profession of Martial Arts. Listen, we love what we do. We have 48 classes per week running constantly at our school. We allow our students to excel without limitations.

Our CRAZYYYY SCHEDULE

(click the image)

Of course, it's a given that the school should be clean and well-maintained, and the staff, courteous and professional.

Here Are Other Things To Look For

6. Clean Mats Daily With The Right Equipment. Nobody wants to train at a school where they are concerned about the cleanliness and their personal health. Without careful cleaning, mats can breed bacteria and contagious skin disorders. Does the school you're considering clean the mats every day? Do they have a scheduled system to clean the mats, do they vacuum them and mop them? What type of cleaner do they use? If they're trying to save a few bucks by not buying the right equipment and materials to protect your health, do you really want to belong to their gym? You may not know this but bleach doesn't reliably kill all bacteria or guarantee safe, clean mats. That's why a good school should use a special mat cleaner designed to protect your health.

7. First Aid Kit That Is Equipped. Though all martial arts school practice safety measures, accidents may happen. Do even you want to think about training in a school where there isn't a first aid kit? Rug burns do happen, and a good school is prepared for anything – including having a well-equipped first aid kit that is updated and restocked regularly. You shouldn't have to worry about your health when you're training BJJ.

8. Expensive Equipment. Sometimes you find schools that think that infrastructure is not needed to develop champions, but the idea that training in a parking lot will make world champions just isn't true. You have to understand what it takes to become a competitive athlete at that level and it requires a school with an open, flexible schedule, essential pieces of fitness equipment and tremendous support from instructors and teammates. If the school owner is not investing in making the school better every single day of every single week of every single month then this is a clear sign that they are just there to take your money and sell you the belief that you're training a high quality self-defense system. Most martial artists spend a lot of time in their schools, it is like a home to them and if they're not putting equipment that makes their life more comfortable and more pleasant then they don't care much about what goes on in there, other than creating a factory that produces money.

9. Insurance Policy. It might be something that you don't even think about, but you should. Martial arts schools are required to carry insurance and if a school does not, it means that they are cutting corners with some of their most important financial obligations, obligations that have to do with their customers' health. That is not a good sign. It means that they probably aren't financially viable, or are just so blatantly irresponsible or stupid that they don't care.

10. Appearance Does Matter. If a school doesn't value its appearance – CLEAN, NEW, QUALITY MATS, SPACE AND UNIFORMS – do you really think you'll be getting quality instruction from qualified teachers? Chances are a school with a run-down atmosphere will not pay its instructors very well and as a result you'll be receiving inferior teaching, which unfortunately would mean that you'd be wasting your time and possibly endangering your safety. If a school is well-maintained, the instructors act, dress and speak professionally and the equipment and mats are clean and new, it is much more likely that you have found a quality gym where you will receive quality instruction.

11. Are the Students People You'd Want to Hang Out With?If you're serious about a school and about training any martial art you will have to devote serious amounts of time to it. You'll be making the school your second home, and the people who train there will become your teammates and friends. When you're looking at schools speak to the students, ask them how often they train, how long they've been training, what they like about the school, etc. If they're pumped and excited and you meet a bunch of people who have been there for awhile, that's a sign that the school is a positive and stimulating environment for serious athletes. If, on the other hand, you talk to some people and they seem like immature, meathead, idiots, you might want to try another gym. Any school owner who truly cares about building a positive team environment won't tolerate unacceptable behavior that makes other students uncomfortable.

12. Read the Contract. A lot of people don't actually read contracts that they sign. You should. The contract should be in legible, relatively understandable language that you can read in a few minutes. If it is pages and pages and pages of tiny print you might want to wait before you sign it. The instructor or person who is working with you should answer any questions or doubts you have about the contract, without pressuring you. Some contracts are fairly simple, while others are extremely complicated and verbose. The reality is that just because you're signing something doesn't mean that it binds you no matter what — all contracts have to be written within the bounds of the law — but nobody wants to have to get a lawyer to argue about a contract. READ IT FIRST. A good school will offer cancellation information, and will forgive contracts if you move a certain distance from any affiliate schools, if you join the armed forces or if you suffer a serious and limiting physical injury. Once you understand the contract completely, then decide whether or not you want to commit to the school and its contract terms.

13. Team Building Events. A good martial arts school knows that the secret to its success is building a strong team where members feel connected to each other, the instructors and their school. Competition is an easy way to build teams, and make sure that the school is up to date with the latest techniques by pitting it against other local/national/international competitors who are also striving to be their best in the art. Nevertheless, competition is only one part of team building. There are many members who train but due to their families, jobs or personal preferences do not want to compete or cannot compete. It is important to hold team building events around them as well, as they are also essential members of the school environment. In a good school everyone should feel a sense of belonging, as if the team is a large family. Good schools host events like team barbecues, award ceremonies to recognize hard work (both by competitors and non-competitors), dinners, children's activities and more.

14. Lots of Classes/ Open Schedule Belonging to a gym or a martial arts school is useless if your work or life schedule doesn't allow you to attend classes. If you're a competitor you'll want to spend dozens of hours a week at the school, and having access to the advanced technique and fitness classes that you need will be essential. If you're not doing it, it would be hard to beat the competitor at the local school who is able to take his/her training to the max while you fall behind. Also, a school with a lot of classes is a good sign of success. It means that there are a lot of students who attend classes and demand high-quality instruction. It also means that the school has no problem meeting these demands and is not just all about the money.

15. DVR Security System. This might not seem essential at first glance, but it truly is. A DVR is a digital video recording system. If the school has women and kids attending classes a DVR system is extra insurance to make sure that the staff is behaving appropriately at all times. It is often said that prevention is the best medicine and any school owner who acknowledges that by investing in a DVR system is one step ahead of 90 percent of schools that are out there. Pretty much, think of it like this: It's not an essential expense for the school's success. But it's peace of mind for the parents, students, instructor and school owner. If they are thinking this far ahead there is a good chance that many other things have also been thought of and taken care of that will ensure the school will be in the community for many years to come.

16. Specialized Classes by Experience Level, Age, Gender, etc. There are huge physical differences between kids, women and men. And while it's true that some 14-year-olds can go toe to toe with some very athletic, strong men and there are women, who after proper training, can also take on larger and stronger male and female opponents, it is also true that this does not happen overnight. Rarely can a woman or a 14 year old kid come into a room and immediately beat a 6-foot-tall man who weighs over 200 pounds and has over a year of experience. This goes back to a school having a good infrastructure. Students should be paired with appropriate opponents so that they can hone their skills and improve faster. A good school will have classes for advanced students, classes for beginner students, classes for competitors, classes for women-only, conditioning classes, a solid program of kids classes for various age groups, and so on. If a school has that infrastructure in place, it means that they understand the different needs of their students.

17. ONE Instructor Is Not The Master of ALL TRADES. It is funny to watch when a school in [blank] says that they teach Karate, Kobudo, Krav Maga, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Judo, Kendo, Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, Street Fighting, Mixed Marital Arts (MMA), Muay Thai and Kickboxing. Then you walk in, and find out that there is only one or two instructors. More like Jack of all trades and master of none. Once again, be sure to check your potential instructor's credentials thoroughly. Don't just look on their website and take their word for it. Do some research — you can find out a lot just by Googling a person's name.

18. Customer Service Oriented. The school's staff must treat you well every day from the moment you enter the door. They should receive you with a smile, address any questions with courtesy and take extra time, especially during your first class, to help you integrate with the team. Think of it this way, if they're not doing this in the first class when they surely should be trying to make the best impression, what can you expect after a month.

19. Upper Belt Students Are Friendly And Helpful. The saying is true: "The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree." When you go into a program as a beginner you'll be learning both from the instructor and from the more experienced students who train at a school. If they are jerks, mean or act like angry wolves, chances are that the instructor is either like this or has tolerated unacceptable behavior that has spread throughout the gym like a virus. The upper belt students should be wiser, more mature and willing pass on their knowledge to newer, less experienced students.

Last but not least…

20. GOOD PEOPLE. Martial arts are not just about fighting. As a matter of fact, it's a great tool for growth for an individual spiritually, physically and mentally. Through training you should have the opportunity to challenge your body and your mind and become wiser, more motivated and more able to confront obstacles — whether on the mats or in other areas of your life. These are usually traits of very successful, honest and helpful people. A good school forms a great network of friends who may lend each other books, find each other jobs, help each other with their respective professions, support one another and help one another improve their lives daily. If you find a good school that has these kinds of people, your membership cost paid itself the moment you walked through the door.

Martial Arts is Life Long Learning Pursuit

Fact #3: Many can talk the talk but few, walk the walk — THAT’S WHY TALK IS CHEAP

You know you don’t have to be an expert to make a difference, but the real problem is that there are people out here trying to make money and a quick buck without the drive, the passion, and desire to become experts or truly make a difference other than in their wallet size. At Team Lloyd Irvin we have a saying:

“Life is a hill, you are either sprinting to the top or you are slipping down. You are either a winner for the day or a LOSER. WE ALWAYS TRY TO BE A WINNER EVERYDAY!”

The worse case scenario is that some talkers will lie to your face when their actions are in-congruent with their words. Not only do we have an unbelievable schedule but we also believe in getting the best equipment for our students to excel. On our 3,000 square feet of mat you will find all the tools necessary to make your body into a machine. Master Roberto has been known to buy equipment on the spot as soon as a student has requested it. You tell us what you would like for us to get and we will add it to our list… we love the latest stuff because we believe in the evolution of martial arts, sports, and fitness.

Martial Arts

Adults

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport and a form of self-defense that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique — most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be trained for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense. Kickboxing/Muay-Thai: Developed in Thailand, the art of Muay Thai a.k.a. “Thai Boxing” is the National Sport of Thailand and has already gained popularity and recognition in the US and internationally. There are five major components to Thai Boxing: (1) Punches, (2) Kicks, (3) Knees, (4) Elbows, and (5) Clinching. Students interested in concentrating on full-contact, stand-up techniques and looking to get in the best shape of their life should look no further than our highly effective Thai Kickboxing program. Versatility is key in life.”

MMA (Mixed Martial Arts): Mixed Martial Arts is one of the fastest growing sports in the America. It is a combination of a variety of martial arts and allows fighters to use both striking and grappling techniques. It is sometimes referred to as “Ultimate Fighting” after the biggest MMA promotion in the World, the Ultimate Fighting Championship. In our MMA classes you’ll spend part of your time learning techniques and part of your time sparring with appropriate partners who will challenge you to fight hard. You’ll learn to use a combination of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, submission grappling, Judo and Muay Thai kickboxing to defend yourself and attack your opponent. Women-Only Program – Our Women-Only Program offers training in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing – the perfect combination for self-defense and fitness. Women in these classes learn the same techniques that professional MMA fighters are using in a friendly, supportive environment. Women are welcome to participate in all of our classes, but many also find it valuable to train in our women-only classes to gain experience for tournaments where they will compete against other women, to build relationships with women on the team and to work on techniques that are particularly valuable for smaller people facing larger, stronger opponents. Children and Juniors

“Giving Children an Unfair Advantage in Life”

Tiny Ninjas Martial Arts: Tiny Ninjas classes are for children ages 3 to 6, and you would be amazed at what children so young are capable of. Our Kids Program follows a true Mixed Martial Arts curriculum composed of Thai Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and Wrestling. However, the training is not limited to simply improving your child’s physical abilities and teaching him/her how to defend himself/herself – it is an educational / Black Belt program that will give your child the life skills necessary to succeed in martial arts, school and in life: Discipline, goal-setting, leadership, focus and more. In this program we use our knowledge of Strength and Conditioning Methods we use for our older athletes to provide you children with incredible motor skills, coordination, and athletic ability from a young age. Your child will be the start of his Physical Education Class in School! More information about our Childrens and Junior’s Martial Arts Classes in the Southwest Florida Area:

Little Ninjas Martial Arts: Little Ninjas classes are for ages 7 to 10, and at this time you’ll start seeing truly incredible developments in your child’s physical and mental capabilities. We’ll capitalize on their potential, continuing to emphasize all martial arts skills we teach to the younger children, and working on core values: Respect, Discipline, Focus, Positive Thinking, Persistence and much more. Your child will be working with peers on a regular basis, improving social skills that are essential as he/she matures, along with being challenged mentally, physically and emotionally. We’ll be there supporting, encouraging and cheering your child on 100 percent of the time — Helping to motivate them to do well on and off the mats.

Juniors: Our juniors students are ages 11 to 14, and they are on the brink between childhood and adulthood. As you know, this is a critical time for children — a time when they are beginning to test out their own independence and also a time when it is most important that they receive guidance from positive, productive sources. We will continue to challenge your child physically and mentally, and our focus on responsibe actions, respect and excellence will be particularly valuable to your child at this age. Children in Juniors classes will learn more advanced techniques, and with those techniques they’ll learn personal responsibility and exceed what they think are their limits. We will not only work to help your child find success on our mats, but also outside of our four walls in their classrooms at school, at home with their siblings and everywhere they go.

P.S.The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I have a simple question for you:

Head Instructor Roberto Torralbas Enjoying Rio De Janeiro after winning Bronze at Rio International Open, one of Brazil’s and the World’s most Competitive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships

Chapter 1: ARE YOU HAPPY WITH YOUR LIFESTYLE?

I guess the better question is: Do you live a passionate, challenging, constantly changing, lifestyles that makes most around you impressed by your energetic self? Are you an inspiration for others? Why NOT? What would you say if I told you that a Martial Arts Education can be more valuable than a degree from an Ivy League University.

Look let me be frank with you. In life nothing is white or black, but different shades of gray. Things are

Worse, Pretty Bad, Bad, Not Desirable, Neutral, Decently Favorable, Good, Better or Best

and Team Third Law is for anyone looking to improve their lifestyle for the better or best!

Bold Personal Message from Roberto Torralbas
Founder of Team Third Law, Pan-American Champion and Four Time National Champion (for more info click here)

“What I didn’t know then was that Cornell was just a stepping stone for meeting the mentors who have shaped my life, who I found through Martial Arts.”

Before I was known by the Martial Arts Community as the BJJ Engineer and called Master Roberto by my students, I was a college kid at Cornell University, an IVY LEAGUE UNIVERSITY…

When I was accepted into Cornell University I deeply believed I had made it in life… I came at the age of 10 from Cuba with only my mother to count on, leaving 99.9% of my family behind due to political reasons and circumstances. We were very broke and in very horrifying conditions. Cornell University was my only shot. At the time Cornell was top 10 school in the WORLD for Engineering (according to US NEWS Magazine Study/ Report).

What I didn’t know then was that Cornell was just a stepping stone for meeting the mentors who have shaped my life, who I found through Martial Arts.

At Cornell, I joined a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club where I met Master Julius Park, also a recent graduate from Cornell University and now very well known and respected Martial Arts Expert. He introduced me to Master Lloyd Irvin, a world-renowned Martial Arts Master.

I WAS VERY, VERY, VERY LUCKY TO STUMBLE UPON SUCH GREAT MENTORS…

but here is what changed my life forever. It’s what I call the:

Bushido Code for the 21st Century

Bushido, meaning “Way of the Warrior,” is a name in common usage since the late 19th century which is used to describe a uniquely Japanese code of conduct adhered to by samurai since time immemorial, and loosely analogous to Western concepts of chivalry.

This code is said to have emphasized virtues such as:

Loyalty, Honor, Obedience,

Duty, Filial Piety, Self-Sacrifice

Unfortunately these principles are not taught anymore in our society nor at our schools. You may read about them or see them in old martial arts movies, but you never practice them consistently enough to internalize them in your every day life. What I learned under the guidance of Master Lloyd Irvin and Master Julius Park was not only to understand such things but to internalize them. This has been the secret to the success of our team.

My dream was not to have a martial arts school …my dream was to have a university to teach people to prosper and live an AMAZING lifestyle in which your mind and body becomes stronger day by day, your knowledge accumulates and as you progress, you make fewer excuses and take more responsibility for your actions. Martial Arts and Fitness are the tools used at Team Third Law to achieve such a lifestyle.

I was lucky to stumble upon Master Julius at Cornell, but I was smart enough to hang on to a good opportunity. THIS IS THAT OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU!
