If You Want To Learn Judo This Could Be The Most Important, Time Saving, Never Talked about Message You Will Ever Read

Dear Prospective Student,

The founder of Judo as you may know or may not know is Jigoro Kano, and this great man, is turning in his grave about the current way Judo is taught in America. The purpose of this letter is to inform you and keep you from falling victim to the same epidemic that has literally destroyed Judo.

The Story of How I Left Judo and Came Back to Judo

Hi my name is Roberto Torralbas, I am a martial arts instructors specializing in multiple grappling arts ( Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Sambo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, No-Gi Grappling) and a constant mission of learning more and more every day about the best techniques each style has to offer and eliminating the stuff that’s does not work.

I started my training in Judo at the age of 8 years old in kids judo program under a strict training regimen for kids. This was not in the USA, but Cuba, and it was taught by the Cuban athletes that represented the country in the Olympics Games. I never forget the day that my instructor (a 175 pounder) threw a 300 pound man for ippon in a in-house practice tournament. I was very impressed and scared by how explosive these athletes were, I couldn’t believe, Judo was intimidating, fascinating, and out of this world and I fell in love instantly.

Then I moved to the United States at the age of 10, and we could not afford Judo, and when I saw all the distractions this country offers, I really had no interest in training Judo as a child (I deeply regret this). Judo at age of ten in Cuba was really hard in the USA I wanted to play Nintendo instead.

Long story short at the age of 17 my yearning for Judo returned. I started watching videos in You Tube and I said… it is time I go back to my roots. I was in college then and I took Judo for P.E credit and joined the Cornell University Judo Club. I was kicking every one’s butt except for this black belt that was legit. So what did I think? I stupidly concluded that I most be the judo prodigy the world had been waiting for. Sounds funny now , but then at the age of 17 / 18, I was very blinded by my ego.

Judo In America Has Been Water Down To The Maximum

Anyways practice was boring, always the same foot sweeps and throws that never worked. I would always try to train with my friend the black belt because he would kick my butt easily, and I felt he was a huge challenge. He had one technique that really caught my attention. A simple arm bar from on top of your opponent. Atr the time this was revolutionary. Can you really do that? Is that legal? I remember asking. I insisted that he taught me it, and he refused because he didn’t want me doing techniques to other students that the main teacher had not taught, and was never going to teach by the way. One day, he said if you really want to learn ground techniques you should train with the group of guys that was always in a corner of the gym, a bunch of white belts and one blue belt. I said: “With them, they are white belts you are a BLACK BELT!”

Anyways one day I followed their advice and these white belts and blue belt beat my butt without breaking a sweat. I was like: “What is going on, what is this, this is not what we learn in judo class”. They called it Jiu-Jitsu, a special type of Jiu-Jitsu called Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Gracie Jiu Jitsu, and quite honestly I did not care where it was from but I wanted to learn it. After 2 years of training BJJ my friend the black belt had his hands filled with me.

I even gave judo many shots while I trained BJJ, but my jiu jitsu skills dominated in all dojos, and I was far from being the best in the BJJ scene. I could not even be taken down and with the little Judo and Wrestling at the time I had picked up , I could take Black Belts down of all ages, even some olympians. I concluded JUDO SUCKS! but I was very wrong.

The Harsh Truth About JUDO

Its Hard And Most Don’t Know How To Teach It

After years of experiencing mediocre judo all over America , I finally met two people who showed me the efficiency of Judo. One of of them was Lloyd Irvin, and the other was Nick Delpolpolo (who placed 8 at the Olympics in 2012). What impressed me about them was not know how much they knew, but how they explained the concept. They told me all the problems arising from the current way Judo is taught in America, and the problems with the current rules and so forth.

At this point in the story I had been doing BJJ, Wrestling, Judo, Sambo for about 12 or 13 years and it all started to make sense. The physics, the angles, the way to teach the grappling arts, it all made perfect sense now.

I can only start to wonder what Jigoro Kano’s Judo was like. What his style of teaching was like, his mission. So I started doing some research and after reading a couple of biographies I was extremely shook up, by how far everything had deviated from what the great teacher of jiu jitsu and founder of judo had envisioned for the art.

Judo As Jigoro Kano Intended It To Be

Truths/Facts:

  1. Jigoro Kano: Jiu Jitsu Devoted Jiu Jitsu Student, and Founder of Judo
  2. Jigoro Kano was a devoted student of many art forms of Jiu Jitsu, after been bullied immensely as a child.
  3. Jigoro Kano was a student of all forms of grappling. He studied some sumo, and wrestling to learn new techniques to be able to defeat class mates in his dojo who were bigger than him.
  4. According one biography Jigoro Kano use kata Guruma / or fireman’s carry (wrestling name) takedown to finally takedown the best student in his master’s dojo.
  5. This same technique is shown above and is completely outlawed in the Judo Olympics and the International Judo Federation.
Judo is Jiu -Jitsu but it is supposed to apply to ones life and how you carry yourself. All the techniques of Jiu-Jitsu that works are technique of Judo. Jigoro Kano wanted to call his style of Jiu-Jitsu Judo because under him you can only learn if you were a decent individual. He hated jiu jitsu students who fought for prize money, and used jiu jitsu for bullying purposes. He wanted to invent a martial arts that used jiu jitsu techniques and jiu jitsu concepts of being gentle and flexible outside of the mats. In other words Jiu Jitsu + Good Character Philosophy = Jigoro Kano’s vision for Judo
  6. Obviously most Judo schools in America don’t follow the code of conduct which is the main difference from Jiu Jitsu and Judo according to the founder, so what’s the point of calling it Judo? Tell me that at least you are trying.
Jigoro Kano and his students Maeda who taught the Gracies in Brazil taught Jiu Jitsu techniques that now are illegal in the olympics ( with the excuse of safety without any conclusive data on the dangers, and trying to make the art more exciting and a spectator sports that sells tickets for their Old Money Business). Jigoro Kano never intended for Judo to be a spectator sport, but a martial art that could be used for self defense.
  7. Jigoro Kano performing an arm entanglement that illegal by the IJF that results in arm bar or shoulder lock submissions.

What’s The Point Of Judo Anyways? For The Harsh Reality Read Below

According To Jigoro Kano I Believe Is To Learn How To Takedown Any Opponent And Controlled Them Using Maximum Efficiency Regardless Of What They Are Wearing, But The Harsh Reality Says Different…

The Harsh reality: You can get a good wrestler with a good gi and a good brazilian jiu jitsu practitioner and they will take down a lot of judokas in a no rules contest. The harsh reality is that the current rules have destroyed Kano’s jiu Jitsu and has completely made it into spectator sport that is as useful for martial arts as basketball is.

What is the point of doing Judo for ten years if you can wrestle against a wrestler, or grapple with a jiu jitsu student for more than 3 minutes.

Why I Still Love Judo And Teach Judo

I was a first time guest at Team Third Law today. They answered my questions, I was able to sign an online waiver, and I enjoyed my first class. All the participants were welcoming and the instructor, Coach Joe, helped me to understand the techniques he was demonstrating. He also made sure that I was matched with a suitable training partner. I highly recommend that everyone, from the curious, to the hobbyist, to the experienced martial artist check out Team Third Law!

I dropped in tonight for the Thursday Muay Thai session while in town and had a fantastic experience. Coach Joey was knowledgeable, friendly, and communicated techniques clearly while providing helpful feedback. The gym environment was awesome, everyone was welcoming, and there was a great mix of skill levels, making it easy for both beginners and advanced students to feel comfortable. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in town and highly recommend anyone interested try an intro session here. Thank you again, Team Third Law!

There are not enough words to describe how much we love and appreciate Team Third Law Academy. My five-year-old daughter is absolutely thriving! Her confidence and self-esteem have grown tremendously since she started, and she truly enjoys every single class. She’s always excited to go and practice with her teammates. Coach Joe and the entire coaching staff are beyond professional—respectful, encouraging, and such amazing role models for the kids. They create an environment where children feel supported, challenged, and inspired. We genuinely feel like a part of one big family here. If you're looking for a positive, nurturing, and empowering environment for your child to grow both on and off the mats, we highly recommend joining Team Third Law. It’s been a game-changer for our family!

I am a 67 year old snow bird who winters in Naples and decided to take up Muay Thai as part of my retirement. I tried out Third Law based on its proximity to my residence and the wonderful reviews it had gotten. Best choice ever. Coach Joey is wonderful. His classes are great and entirely welcoming to students of all (adult) ages and experience levels. My experience, for example, was zero, while others in the class were quite experienced. Coach Joey fosters a community where each participant is respected. I just can’t say enough about this team and my time at Third Law. My class is now another reason I’m looking forward to trekking back to Naples next Winter.

We started sending our eldest child to TTL in spring 2022 and have continued ever-since. Our youngest now also now attends. We also started using TTL for summer camp last year and the kids love it! The coaches & staff at TTL are tough as nails but have the patience of saints, which is the perfect combination for our childrens' needs. We are very happy with our years at TTL.

My brother and I were visiting the Fort Myers area a few years back and decided to drop into a local Jiu Jitsu gym in the area. There were other gyms that were closer to where we were staying, but this gym had a lot of great reviews and when I called they were very friendly. My brother and I had a great experience and got good training for a noon class (typically smaller classes than an evening class). We would recommend this gym to anyone in the area or traveling from out of area.

This year was the first time my kiddos attended Team Third Laws Summer camp and we were not dissapointed. The kids had a blast on all the field trips and loved participating in the martial arts classes they did 3 times a week. A big plus was the kids were not on their tablets all summer and were continously active! The staff was amazing and we look forward to camp next year. If i had to give one critique it would be to extend camp a few more weeks:)

We were looking for a class for our 7 year old that was not only fun but would teach him skills such as respect and discipline. We are thoroughly enjoying the facility, the way that class is taught, and the kind yet stern nature the coach teaches all the kids. Very impressed!

Started the program about two years ago, and before that i had no fighting experience. I was always interested in learning but, found myself always fearing I would go in, and it be full of ego. However, I was pleasantly surprised upon entering how friendly everyone is and calm even with someone so new to the concept as I. That extends to the staff as well as the other students. They thrust you into sparring at the end of each class (not forced but highly encouraged) even if it is your first class. I wasn't expecting that, but it is what I'm there for, so I went with it. The experience was amazing. The people I sparred with, was all in good fun and very informative in terms of technique and skill. They didn't make it easy though. Wouldn't want them too either. It's a fight it is not supposed to be. But if you ever needed a break from punching each other in the face it was perfectly normal, and you just talk about life for a minute and go back to it. Such an incredible feeling to be on such good terms with people after trying to beat one another up. Jokes, compliments on good hits and combos. No ego in sight. Never in the year and some change did I have a bad experience there and wow what improvement I received to my health and confidence. It translated to all aspects of my life. A real game changer. I had to take a break for a time and canceled my subscription due to life, but when i found time one night around christmas I wanted to see my old sparring partners. I was welcomed with open arms and gloves. They took me in so that I could work with them again and man was I out of shape from taking that break. It really showed me how much it did for me. It was so bad I couldn't confidently spar at the end of the night, so I had to sit it out. I offered to pay for the one class, but they told me the one night was ok. Great people. Great Gym. Special shoutout to Master Roberto. At the time I went he was running the Kickboxing section which is what I mostly did. He was patient, firm, knowledgeable, and fun. My growth over that first year was phenomenal. Thank you, Master Roberto, if you see this. Also, shoutout to Coach Joe. My first ever class was with him in the Boxing class on a Saturday. He whopped me with only jabs I'm pretty sure! Shoutout to Coach Joey as well for filling Master Robertos shoes exceptionally. Always fostering such a positive environment. I am going to be starting again tonight. Wish me luck. Hope to see you there! don't be afraid. They will take good care of you! Sorry it took me so long to write this Master Roberto. Hope to see you soon!

Both great atmosphere and great training/ coaches! You don't often find that combo in martial arts gyms.they've got BBJ (also the he add coach has a black belt in BJJ and Judo) and Muay Thai. I forgot the name of the two main coaches, but they know what they're doing. I think they've had legit cage fights or something.

If you're nervous about starting martial arts then I suggest training here. I went in for my first class and I've been here ever since. The environment is great to work in and as long as you apply what you learn it's well worth the experience and money. I truly recommend third law to anyone new and experienced

My daughter has gone to Team Third Law for 3 years. This past year we did the after school program. We’ve recommended this gym to everyone! The staff is amazing; quick to respond, trustworthy with kids, encouraging, respectful, stern yet kind. Coach Joe has left such a positive impact on my daughter. He really made all the difference both at the after school program and at practice. My daughter learned a lot both mentally and physically here. It was just what we needed and I’m thankful for everything this facility has taught her.

We have had a wonderful experience at this gym. The coaches are knowledgeable, and the kids are learning much more than just how to submit an opponent. This gym teaches how to be a good person who is contributing and thriving in society. Worth every penny.
