How effective is BJJ for self-defense?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu uses principles of biomechanics to allow a smaller person to defeat a much bigger and heavier opponent making it invaluable for women who are interested in self-defense in case they are ever attacked. Our classes are designed to address standing attacks as well as what to do once the fight hits the ground, equipping our female students with skills that will help them avoid and control dangerous situations.
When women are attacked, they are often knocked down onto the ground and immobilized so that the attacker has complete control. Since BJJ is an art focused on techniques for grappling on the ground, it is uniquely able to address this type of self-defense situation. You’ll learn how to analyze the physical position you’re in and act against your opponent by taking advantage of their body position and weight distribution.
In addition to its unique self-defense applications, our program will help you become physically, emotionally and mentally strong, challenging your mind and body with new and different workout and training situations. This will build self-confidence, self-esteem and overall well-being, empowering you to take control of your life and any difficult situations that come your way.
What if I am very out of shape?
Whatever shape you’re in, it’s ok. One of the main goals of our Women-Only Self-Defense Class is to promote activities, exercises and training patterns that help our students gain strength, physical stamina and flexibility and for many of our students, the pounds come off easier than ever before. We will work with you wherever your physical abilities currently are, scaling our workouts and training drills to meet your needs so that they are attainable but challenging goals that help you make it to the next level of personal physical fitness. Then, when you’re ready for a new challenge, we’ll raise the bar again.
Can I do women-only classes and regular classes?
Absolutely. We offer programs for all levels of training, and there are many women who currently train in our regular gi and no-gi classes. You don’t have to choose one or the other.
